Alison Buchanan became the only black female Artistic director of an opera company in Europe after taking over the running of Pegasus Opera Company in 2017. Since her tenure Pegasus has become a Arts Council England National Portfolio Company developing various partnerships with arts organizations around the country, including Glyndebourne Opera, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Central School of Speech & Drama to name but a few.

Buchanan has championed the works of black composers and works by Southern Asian composers whilst continuing the company mission to bring ‘Harmony in Diversity’ by advocating for and giving opportunities to black and Asian artists and creatives in the opera industry. In 1921 Alison Curated MAMI WATA for the Royal Opera House, a groundbreaking programme celebrating the vocal works of Black and Middle Eastern women composers. incorporating video, dance with an all-female diverse cast and instrumentalists.
As an international soprano Alison Buchanan has been praised for her musical versatility, a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia the critically acclaimed singer completed a young artist program with San Francisco Opera, making her debut as Mimi in La Boheme. Alison has worked with Sir. Colin Davis, Andre Previn, Sir. Simon Rattle, Marin Alsop, David Robinson, Jane Glover and Donald Runnicles to name but a few with orchestras which include the London Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Boston Symphony, BBC Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Bayerishes Rundfunk. Alison is the winner of several competitions including the Pavarotti, Maggie Teyte, Washington International and the Kathleen Ferrier competitions. Recordings include Peter Grimes with the London Symphony conducted by Sir Colin Davis and the Songs of George Walker accompanied by the composer.
